About Audio Cd

Audio CD is an [umbrella term] that refers to many standards of means of playing back audio on a [CD] or even a [DVD].

Standards [CD]
  • [Red Book (audio CD standard)] - the original means of playing back audio on the medium.
  • [5.1 Music Disc] - an extension to the red book standard that uses [DTS Coherent Acoustics] [5.1 surround sound].
  • [Super audio CD] - A format which competes with DVD-Audio. Also uses a proprietary design that can't be easily mimicked by consumer CD copying software.
  • [MP3 CD] - A CD which contains MP3 files in [Yellow Book (CD standard)] rather than converted from MP3 to red book mode.
[DVD]
  • [DVD-Audio] - "Audio CD" can be a misnomer for this format since it uses the same physical shape as a "CD", and plays audio but as a "DVD".

How Do I make An Audio CD?

Q) I have Nero 6, creating an ordinary Audio CD from WAV files. Why don't my CD players want to play the disks? I put the CD on my computer which states the files are 'CD Audio track' and no problem, but none of my stand-alone CD players will recognise the disks as being audio!!!! CDs are CDR-80, are there some special setttings?? Ok - Update - The CD plays in my car stereo, but I need to be able to burn a CD with the correct settings so that it plays in all CD players - regardless of how old the player might be!!!

A) Hmm I don't believe so. Try a newer player, some players have issues with CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Did you close the burning session?

My CD/DVD Drive doesnt burn audio CD's?

Q) I have the computer FUJITSU SIEMENS - SCALEO P. When i try to burn an audio CD it doesnt seem to work - the buffer level doesnt seem to be active. I use Nero. The drive i have is - HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4164B Could somebody please help me out. I really want to burn audio CD's!!!! Thanks

A) Ok you have a DVD RW drive and it sure shouldnt have any problems burning CDs. Nero has a diagnostic software which will tell u if there is anything wrong with the drive. If you are sure about the buffer, Im afraid you have to take it back to the Hardware guy. Hope this helps. .:Fishie:.

CD burned on PC doesn't work in audio CD player?

Q) I used Nero to burn tracks from my mp3 player onto an audio cd, but it doesn't play in my CD player, only on my PC. Why and what can I do about it? Thanks!

A) As far as I remember Nero has a serparate option to burn music CDs - did you use that option? Have you tried playing the CD in a different CD player - also try it in a different PC (just to try to narrow down the problems!) Have to say though - I always use Windows Media Player to burn my CDs - always works. It takes music in any format and converts it into a data type that is recognised by music players which don't generally have the ability to recognise computer file types such as MP3

mp3 burned onto audio cd for playing in the car?

Q) how do I burn an audio cd from my mp3 collection so I can play it on my cd player in the car?

A) You can use Nero: http://www.nero.com If your car player can't play MP3 natively then you'll have to make an "Audio CD" which converts MP3 to CD format. You can only fit about 15-20 songs on a CD this way. If your car player does support MP3 natively, then just make a "Data CD" disc and load up the MP3 files, you can fit about 300 MP3 songs on a CD this way.

My DELL Inspiron 1300 doesn't read cd-rom/audio cds anymore, but it reads DVDs correctly. Could you help me?

Q) Since I failed burning an Audio CD using Itunes, my drive doesn't recognise cd-rom/audio cds, although it reads DVDs perfectly. No error message, only noise from dvd drive. It's like my dual-layer dvd-cd drive has become a dvd drive only. Could you help me? I hope I don't have to buy a new cd drive! Andrea

A) A CD/DVD drive is in fact a combination and it is not unusual for one or the other to fail. I would suggest getting a replacement drive, you could keep the existing one as well if you have a spare bay. They are not expensive nowadays, you can get a good dual layer for under £40 if you shop around. Buy or borrow a copy of Micro Mart £2 and check out the adverts. You will get fitting instructions and they really are not difficult to do. If however you don't have a spare bay simply replace the existing one. The only thing to watch is at the rear there are jumpers marked master and slave, ensure that you set them the same as your existing drive Good Luck.

A) it's called limewire.... www.limewire.com = free music or you can look on itunes store and see if they have it. if you can't find it in stores like bestbuy or fye or something like that, you'll still probably be able to find it online somewhere.

How is it, to change an MP3 audio file to CD audio track file?

Q) I have got a CD player from a friend. However, it doesn't play musics saved in mp3 audio file type . It plays only those saved in CD audio track file. So, I need to change my music from the mp3 file type to the CD audio. However, I don't know how to do it. Your immdidate help is most crucial.

A) http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ -Audacity music tool. Open each track in Audacity, then Export As - WAV. You will lose some sound quality, as MP3 is a compression format. Its impossible to put the information back into the track that was lost when it was saved as an MP3.

Why do audio cd's hold so much less info than data cd's?

Q) An average CD will hold about 700 MB of data. I can easily fit 10 albums onto that if I burn it onto a CD as data. Why, then, can I only burn 1 album (duh, a cd is an album) on a CD formatted for audio. What's so special about an audio CD that makes the audio tracks on them so "big", and why won't a data CD play in a CD player? Does the formatting really make all that much of a difference in file sizes on a disk?

A) .cda files are bigger because it can be played on most CD players and like a codec and a CD player can only read one codec. So for some reason its bigger. .mp3 is another codec, And is compressed smaller, And would only work on some CD players (like mp3 players). That's why it is smaller. Good luck and i hope this helps.

Are Audio CD's outdated?

Q) with the advent of SACD (super audio CD), DVD audio, Mp3 players and future technology such as HD-DVD and Blu-ray DVD, what future does the humble audio CD have? does it make sense to invest on a CD collection when you're not sure new CD's and CD players will be around 2-3 years from now?

A) Totally! Digital music is so much better in every single sense!

I insert an audio CD into my PC's CD-ROM but it won't play. I can play mp3 files but just not audio CD. Why?

Q) I've verify that the audio CD is fine by using a CD player. Just that my PC can't play audio CD.. I'm using WinXP. Samsung CD-RW 40-12-40 and Sound card CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device.

A) Like the other posts: Check the volume is turned up in Audio Control Panel (right Mouse click the speaker in the bottom right of screen next to time. make sure everything is turned up. Make sure autoplay is turned on (right mouse click on cd rom drive in my computer. Go to Properties and make sure it is selected, I have seen some sound cards that need the cable on the inside of the computer connected to the CD rom drive. Can pick this cable up at Radio shack for a couple of bucks Make sure the audio cd isn't one of the new ones that prohibit you to play it on a computer. Some, not many now disable the computer play. Windows XP by default has the drivers and codecs installed to play music cd's, but as a rule of thumb download the newest drivers from your manufacturer's website.

Burning audio CD, but Info too big to burn?

Q) I have this presentation on a CD,.. i can play the cd anywhere,.. car, house, computer, ect. I need to burn this cd and yes, I have done it many many times with music CDs,... but when I insert my blank CD, a message comes out telling me that the info is too big for the CD and I would need to make 2 separate audio CDs. My questions is,.... how (if possible) can I "shrink" the info and make it fit in 1 CD??? any help is appreciated.

A) Easiest way around this is to buy a bigger CD to burn it to. If not, you can urn the files into zip files, which are smaller, but in order to use them you will have to unzip them again. to make them smaller, get WinRAR, a freeware that allows you to unpack and pack rar files. open winrar, and right click on the presentation. click on add to archive, and viola, it does the rest for you. laters

Is the Audio CD Dead? If not, when will it be?

Q) I'm a music nut. For years I was a CD guy, I loved having artwork and all that stuff...until iTunes. Now its like having an enormous jukebox at your fingertips. I used to buy CD's just to rip them into iTunes without DRM and then trade them to the local CD store the same day...but now I download everything and I don't think I've purchased a physical CD in probably over a year or so. I also ripped every CD I owned, sold the whole lot, and have gone 100% digital. I don't miss the clutter one bit, and having my music literally on demand actually lets me listen to my collection even more than I used to without reloading a cd changer. So all you music junkies out there, do you think the audio CD format is dead? Its dead to me, thats for sure. Once DRM is done away with for online purchases , I think its bye-bye CD's.

A) The music industry is currently working on this. Their goal is to faze the CD out and start selling music in digital format on what will resemble a memory stick or card, like the ones being used in digital cameras.

Compile an audio cd that can be played on a cd player, how?

Q) How do you compile an audio cd that can be player on a cd player? I use Nero burning program, when I burn the cd with audio format .cda, my computer can play, but not the cd player, what should I do?

A) well thats really strange tell me something wats the actual format that you have them saved in is it MP3 or WMA. Well when you open Nero select CD goto audio section & select create audio CD. than add those files & it'll automatically convert them & make an audio CD. Now the question wats your cd player is it the one that just plays audio cds or is it MP3 ready..?? IF yes than try making an MP3 disc using nero itself.

My Audio Cd does not work on Computer.?

Q) I have P4 with 256 Ram and VIA sound card, i bought original Audio CD. It works fine in some DVD players (it does nt work any MP3 or Cd player), when i put the cd to my computer (DVD drive) The song does not play and the sound is not good to hear, i think the audio codec is the problem. pls anyone tell me how to solve it..? when i rip the format to mp3 or any format, the same kaarrrrrrrrrr sound comes..

A) Try downloading ACE mega codecs pack pro, install it and everything should work. There are a few issues with this codec on dual core systems because of the Dashboard default settings such as don't install the Cyberlink DVD controls option will make your DVD unreadable. If you have other issues slowly uncheck or check certain codecs. but this will let you play songs, CDs, and see movies otherwise unseeable or unhearable.

Inserting tracks on audio CD's?

Q) I have some audio files that are about an hour long. If I burn them to a CD, that CD has just one track. I have to fast forward if I want to get to, say, 45 minutes in. Does anyone know of a way to make audio CD's out of a file with the ability to insert tracks manually? DVD authoring software allows you to insert tracks manually without breaking up the file. Is this possible with audio CD's? Is there software that will do this?

A) You'll need to author the tracks and segment them into the desired lengths you want them to be. I would recommend you use Audacity which is a great media authoring tool - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

How do I burn an audio cd which will play in my car from a cd with mp3 files?

Q) I have a cd containing 29 mp3 files that will not work in my car. Therefore, I'm trying to convert them to an audio cd format that will work in my car and burn them to new cd. My question is 3 fold...1) what file formats work in a stereo (cda?, wav?; I've read some say wav will and some say wav won't work); 2) how come all 29 mp3 files on my existing disc takes up about 550 MB but when I go to burn it as an audio cd I can only burn 2 of the files (the files are only 8MB but about 35 min in length) before it says the disc is full (I'm trying to burn it to a 700MB/80Min cd)? I understand more than 2 files of this length would exceed the 80 Min requirement but why was this not exceeded on the mp3 cd (it was also a 700MB/80Min cd)?

A) MP3 and CDA formats are completely different. Your MP3 cd was technically a computer data CD whereas a car stereo plays in the audio cd format. When a CD-r says 700MB/80 mins, it's one or the other. The 700MB applies to computer data whereas 80 mins applies strictly to audio CD. A song in MP3 format takes up much less space than a song in CDA format. In MP3 at 128 kb/sec, that's about 1 minute 1 MB. In CDA format, it's about 1 minute~10MB. Clearly there's a huge difference. So when burning the CDA format, you have to go by the length of the track that you're burning. Since each track is about 35 minutes, then you can only fit 2 tracks on the disc. Now about burning. Take your MP3 CD and copy the files onto your hard drive. Then insert a blank CD-R and open a burning program and choose audio CD. Drag the MP3s you want on the CD into the queue list and burn it. This disc will work on all standalone CD players. I hope this makes sense to you. Good Luck!

On burning audio cd in Real Player...It says disc finished, but will not play. How can I fix this?

Q) I got Windows Media Player, Nero CD DVD burner, and Real Player. When I burn a cd or dvd it used to finish then eject the disc when it is completly done. Now it says finalizing disc, burn successful, but the disc won't eject. Then to play the disc either dvd or cd, it says on my car player, or pc, can not play this type of disc. I tried data and audio cd, and even though the disc is finished being burned, it somehow isn't done. Could my burner be going bad? Should I uninstall this cd/dvd drive and re-install it?

A) duh? I have the same problem. I think we both need a solution
